COURSE EXPANSION
A public meeting was held on Thursday, August 24th, 2006 concerning the application for re-zoning and the proposed sub-division to the north and west of the golf course which incorporates the actual golf course expansion proposal. The meeting was attended by our area Councilor, Jan Harder, a representative from the City Planning Office and a representative for both the developer and golf course ownership in the person of Miguel Tremblay from the firm of Fotenn Consultants Incorporated. Approximately 60 people were in attendance, the majority being residents of Cedarhill Estates. Also in attendance were a number of members of the club. Many questions were raised by attendees concerning the sub division and the overall impact on existing area residents. At the time of the meeting, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority had not completed their review of the newest proposal and has since responded. Questions raised by the residents and the Conservation Authority, technical and otherwise, are still under review and we will keep you advised of progress.
CLUB STORAGE AND LOCKERS
Although no firm date has been set for the closing of the course, members are asked to have their clubs removed from the club storage area by Sunday, October 15th. We also ask that lockers be cleared by Friday, October 27th. Hopefully we will be experiencing our “Indian Summer” and be golfing well into November.
WINTER GOLF
Once again this year we will be bringing our golf operations and indoor golf simulators to the clubhouse with our scheduled opening date to be January 6, 2007. Please check with the Pro Shop regarding hours of operation along with individual and league pricing.
FOOD EXTRAVAGANZA
On Wednesday, November 8th, our Club will host the Nepean Chamber of Commerce Food Extravaganza 2006 between 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Enjoy a relaxing evening of delicious food, fine wines, greeting friends & networking, with support going to the Queensway Carleton Hospital’s Cancer Centre.

GREENS COMMITTEE (Martin Wells, Chair)
Golf Course Maintenance - wow, a topic that is bound to generate a lot of conversation! Although, we didn't have the best start to the season, as Mother Nature was tough on the course, things eventually got better and the course was in good shape from the middle of the summer onward. Perfect, no, but heading in the right direction. The management and greens committee have worked hard to try to improve the playability of the course and we are confident that it will be even better next year.
The biggest challenge for the maintenance staff is the time required to get the course into shape. Everyone wants it perfect, but that takes time, which means that some players are going to be inconvenienced from time to time. Some courses in the South choose to close the course 1 day a week for maintenance, but we feel that would be even more inconvenient than putting up with a worker or mower from time to time. Sprinklers are another source of frustration but with our hot summers and single line system, it takes longer than all night to get the course watered adequately, consequently players have to play through this the watering process. And lastly the greens, no one likes the effect of aeration or top dressing but in order to keep the greens healthy, this has to be done regularly. Next year, to help ease the pain, we will publish a greens maintenance schedule well in advance of this activity and you will be able to plan your golf around this work.
As scheduled, the greens were aerated on September 25th and there is still a list of projects to be completed this fall such as; new culverts on #2 and #4, say goodbye to the bridge on #2, steps to # 16 red tee box and the completion of the driving range for your fall enjoyment.
We 'd like to thank Chuck and his staff for their efforts this year, something which we should, but don't do often enough. I know that maintenance plans are already underway to further improve things next year.
If you have any comments or thoughts for improvements with the course, please don't hesitate to contact any of the Greens Committee Members.
Enjoy the Fall.
SENIOR MENS COMMITTEE (Al Bentley)
The Cedarhill Senior men have enjoyed another wonderful season at Cedarhill. While our numbers have dwindled slightly over the summer, that has been offset by the enthusiasm shown by those who show up every Thursday morning and all through the week.
The closing breakfast will be held Thursday morning, October 12th at 8:00 AM. Hopefully everyone will be in attendance. I will unfortunately miss this time while cruising in warmer waters. Our thanks go to Ed Cashman for captaining the Seniors one more year.
Congratulations to Roger Stanion for winning the Havelin Trophy this year. If anyone can tell us who has the Havelin Trophy in their possession, it would be greatly appreciated if they would contact the Cedarhill office. We would like the original returned to the club.
At this point in the season we owe our thanks to the club management and the grounds crew who have done wonders with the course this year. We look forward to another great year in 2007. Thanks to all who cooperate to make this group a success at Cedarhill.
DAY LADIES COMMITTEE (Robbie Dempster, Chair)
As our golf season winds down, I would like to thank the following people for helping me through an interesting first year. I could not have done it without the support of Peg Seward and my committee: Carole Myers, Betty Gleeson, Dini Nugent, LIz White and Hilda Nezan. Thanks a lot gang, I really appreciated it! Also, thanks to Greg, Pat, Jackie and all the Pro Shop staff; Lee in Club Storage and Bob and Kathy in the office for all their kind assistance throughout the summer.
We can now report on the winners in our three competitive matches held this summer. Winner of the Handicap Trophy was Michi Small; Davis Cup 2-Ball Winners were Carole Myers and Michi Small; our Tombstone Winner this year was Mary Gavan, and our Most Improved Player was Robbie Dempster. Congratulations ladies.
Our Closing Luncheon was held on Tuesday, October 3 at 1:00 p.m., at which time trophies and Team awards were presented. We had a great turnout and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
One final piece of news -- A very important day was celebrated on September 15th by two of our members. Congratulations to Len & Opal Richard who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
BUSINESS LADIES COMMITTEE (Bev Goold)
END OF SEASON - "YUCK"
But what a great season it was. We had wonderful turnouts each week and I think most of us were happy with our organized weekly events, the main one being Team Golf. We had our second sponsored night on Tuesday (Sept. 26th) thanks to LABATTS. The free beer was a bonus.
We have finalized all our Ladies Night Winners: Business Ladies Cup, Team Golf, Putts, Ringer Board, Chip-ins, Birdies and Most Improved. Prizes will be given at our October 10th Closing Banquet. Thanks to Kathy Dixon and her social committee, and Elias and Tom, this evening has all been organized and it looks like we will have a 98% turnout.
Our Ladies Night Committee will meet on Monday, October 2nd to select some new members needed for next year's Committee. We will also finalize ladies event dates to be put on the Cedarhill Schedule for 2007.
Hopefully there will still be some good weather left during October so KEEP GOLFING.
SOCIAL COMMITTEE
Weather conditions and end of summer holiday commitments resulted in the canceling of a number of events in the latter part of August and September. On September 24th, our “Beef & Greens” event went forward as scheduled and a sincere “Thank You” goes out to the 100+ members and guests who braved the weather and made the event one of our most successful in recent years. Our winning foursome of Marty Wells, Penny Wells, Don Dixon and Kathy Dixon carded a 7 under 63 and walked away with the grand prize, a sleeve of golf balls each. Wow! And better yet, they were “HX Tour Callaways”.
The lunch and roast beef buffet put out by Chef Tom and his staff was excellent as was the service. Our prize table exceeded $2,000.00, the majority of which fell into the hands of Bill and Marie Boon, 3 time winners on 9 tickets. Despite the loud chorus of “boos” heard throughout the crowd, Bill carried a large smile all evening and proved that a little money can go a long way. Special thanks to Lee Whelly for acting as M/C for the evening and, along with members of our Playing Committee, attending to the awards presentations to our various Club Champions. Pat Laderoute did a great job in overseeing the distributions from the prize table and thanks to the members of the Social Committee for your assistance in the registration and other activities leading up to this and all events we undertake.
Our wind up event for September was “Murder Mystery Night” held on Friday, September 29th. A huge success with approximately 60 people in attendance. Thanks go out to members Dave McNaughton and Sandy Farrell for their on stage participation in the event, but we’ve had a lot of comments about their performance. The majority recommend that neither give up their day jobs.
October will bring a packed agenda for club events beginning with our “Turkey Trot” on October 9th, a “Nine and Dine” on October 15th and an “Oktoberfest” event to be held on October 20th. We hope to see some new faces at these upcoming events. Please check your calendars and try to attend.
PRO SHOP NEWS (Greg Chambers, Head Professional)
Fall is now upon us…or is it winter. We went straight from the air conditioner to the furnace in a week. The year is winding down but we still have lots of golf yet to be played.
It’s time to clear out the 2006 inventory so we are doing lots of promotions and discounts. All clothing is ‘buy one, get the second item ½ price’. We’ve got some shirts and shorts left over but you can still get your fall jacket and sweaters for the cold mornings and windy afternoons. If we don’t have the size, colour or style you’re looking for we can easily go through our catalogues with you to find something. This has worked well for special orders especially members with large gift certificate amounts to be used up.
Due to beating any price in the city, our 2006 club inventory is low but we can readily order in new clubs right up until Christmas. Being a Cedarhill Member you’ll always know you got the best deal in town. We do still have some demos remaining which are marked down between 35% and 50% off the retail price. We have the drivers and hybrids in most degrees and shaft flexes.
Hope to still see everyone out and don’t forget to sign up for the Beat the Pro Winners Tournament for the few of you who won your match during the year. The tournament is on Saturday morning, October 7th.
