WE’RE MOVING ON UP!

Congratulations to both our Men’s and Ladies Intersectional Teams.

Our men won their event held at Cedarhill on Sunday, July 9th and will now be moving up to “Section E” competing against Carleton, Glengarry and Thurso in 2007 at Carleton Golf & Yacht Club. Our ladies didn’t fare as well in their Division despite a strong effort by all our players at Mississippi on July 10th. Next year our ladies will be competing in “Section E” against Cornwall, Glen Mar and the Ottawa Hunt. The match will be played in Cornwall. Well done Cedarhill.

WARM UP FACILITY

Weather conditions and other priorities on and around the golf course have resulted in a further delay in completion of this facility. Post holes have now been drilled, posts are on site and installation should take place by the third week of July. Grading will be completed shortly thereafter and the balance of the netting material ordered and erected. The facility should be open for use by mid August. Thank you for your patience.

COURSE ETIQUETTE

Starters are now handing out a “Repairing Your Ball Mark” leaflet. This leaflet is primarily directed at our non-member players but members are encouraged to read and heed. While the leaflet deals with the proper fashion in which to repair a “Ball Mark”, the last page also addresses some issues of etiquette. Monitoring course etiquette is an ongoing task and issues reach far beyond the points mentioned in the leaflet. Please help where you can by reporting incidents whereby members or guests of the club are not complying with regulations, directly to the Pro Shop. Where appropriate, our “Discipline Committee” will become involved.

MEMBERSHIP

Up to and including August 31, 2006, we are offering a membership special in the form of a set of Callaway X18 Irons to new members who initiate and pay the initiation in full at the time of joining the club. This promotion has been well received and was a determining factor for a number of individuals who joined the club in 2006. Our active membership roster has now increased to 416, including our juniors, and we hope to see this number increase to 425 prior to the end of the season. Cedarhill offers a facility we should all be proud of and the prospects of reaching this goal are realistic. You can help us in reaching this goal by continuing to promote the club to your friends, relatives and business associates. Keep in mind we have a referral program at Cedarhill and you could earn upwards to $500.00 in Cedar$Dollars by referring a new member. There are conditions in this referral program and for detailed information, please contact the office or our Golf Professional, Greg Chambers.

MORE NEWS . . .

Cedarhill’s Kate Burnett finished first in the girls’ division at a Canadian Junior Golf Association qualifier for the Junior Worlds. Kate had a two-round total of 157. The Junior World Championship takes place July 12-15 in San Diego, California. Unfortunately, Kate turned 18 this month and was not eligible to participate.

The Men’s Team was the winner in Section F and moves up to E for 2007 – Carleton (Host), Glengarry, and Thurso. Six point winners were Keith Dickie, Tony Fosbery, Keelan Green, Roy Prokopuk and Jeff Wells. The Ladies Team was not as fortunate, and I really wish that they could have experienced the joys of winning. A great group of ladies (the best) and they tried and tried. Next year, they will be in Section E – Cornwall (Host), Glen Mar, Ottawa Hunt.

Win or loose, it is how one conducts themselves (although it is easier to be happy when you win). Cedarhill members should be very proud of their teams. From personal experience, “your” team members represent Cedarhill extremely well … they are second to none when it comes to dignity, sportsmanship and trying hard and they are in plain terms very nice people with whom I am honored to be associated with.

Cedarhill did a fantastic job of hosting the Men’s Intersectional Matches. Cedarhill members continued a tradition of coming out to watch the matches. Thank you to Management, “all staff” and members for your help in this very successful event. Our reputation within the golfing community is held in very high regard … we are the best. To the Cedarhill members who may have been inconvenienced in any way, we appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

There was a new happening this year with an Intersectional Team Night on Friday, July 7th. The members of the Ladies and Mens Teams, with their spouses/friends, met for a social and fun evening. This was a “great party” that hopefully will continue as one of Cedarhill’s traditions.

Enjoy your Summer - Dan Farant, Bill Gosewitz, David Green, Laura MacHutchon, Brad Myers, Tom Bowie

GREENS COMMITTEE (Martin Wells, Chair)

The golf course is looking very good, although it is a little wet. Hopefully Mother Nature will let it dry out somewhat in July.

Chuck and his team have made several improvements this season starting with the tee box on #1, trap on #3, the new men’s tee and steps on #5, the change to the cart paths between 7 & 8, the new tee boxes on # 8, 9 & 11 plus numerous esthetic touches like the area around the Pro Shop, the new Rod Iron fencing along the parking lot and numerous others. As you can see, there is no shortage of progress, so please take the time to let the staff know that we appreciate the improvements.

Next up will be the completion of the practice facility (end of July), steps to the ladies # 16 tee’s and the addition of ball washers and benches.

The greens were aerated at the end of June and are expected to be in great shape before the intersectionals take place on July 9th. Other than top dressing monthly, there is no other work to be done to the greens until the fall.

I’d like to remind you that the following members form our committee and we welcome any thoughts or issues that you have concerning the golf course itself. They are; Joanne Gosewitz, Scott Brewster, Michi Small, David Green, Kyle Murray and Martin Wells. We are here to help make your experience at Cedarhill enjoyable.

DAY LADIES COMMITTEE (Robbie Dempster, Chair)

Summer is well underway and we are in the midst of Handicap and Davis Cup playdowns. Somehow we are managing to squeeze in our games, between the thunderstorms!

We have several milestones to celebrate this month. Two of our longtime Day Ladies turned 90! Win Walker has been a member of Cedarhill since 1980 when she and her husband Fred joined soon after arriving in Ottawa from Montreal. Also celebrating her 90th on July 10th is Ev Brereton. She and her husband Claude joined the Club back in the early ' 70's. So now we have more proof -- golf really does keep you young! I remember trying to convince Win about 15 years ago that a new set of clubs might just improve her game -- you know, the newer, lighter, graphite models. Well, she told me she wasn't sure if she would be around long enough to enjoy them !! Go for it Win -- you still have lots more golf to play. Also, Opal Richard broke 100 (that's score, not age !!) on June 12th . Congratulations Opal.

On a sadder note, we were all sorry to hear of the passing of one of our longtime Day Ladies, Justine Berthiaume. She passed away on Monday, July 3rd in hospital at the age of 82. We haven't seen much of Justine in the last few years as she retired from golf due to health reasons, but we will always remember her joie de vivre and her quick, mischievious smile.

Our Day Ladies' Member/Guest is to be held on July 18th, and we all look forward to proudly showing off our "new and improved" course to our guests.

BUSINESS LADIES COMMITTEE (Bev Goold, Chair)

The Ladies Night group is moving along nicely. We have a minimum of 55 players turn out each Tuesday and end with a great evening dinner. Our Pro-Shop and 50/50 draws have been generating a lot of interest as well as a White elephant night (which we've had two) organized by Joanne Gosewitz and her group. So far no Sponsor Nights but we're still negotiating. Congratulations to Anna Malenica, Lee Whelly and Joanne Gosewitz for winning their Section of the Cedarhill Handicap Tournament.

We have almost completed organizing our Ladies Night Member and Guest for Tuesday, July 11th with 90 participants so far. For those who don't sign up, you are missing a great time. Thanks to Kathy Dixon and her Social Committee for their organization AND Bob Williamson and Greg Chambers for all their support. Also the Social Committee did a great

job organizing our Canada Day celebration. We had a great turnout and wonderful weather.

PRO SHOP NEWS (Greg Chambers, Head Professional)

Hello everyone. I hope you are all starting to dry out from the rain we received last month and that we now have sunny days ahead of us.

In the Pro Shop this month, look for our weekly sales on Ladies and Men’s Night. I still get lots of inquiries on demo’s and their accessibility. I have over 40 demos in stock and can more often than not get something particular in from our rep’s if we don’t have it in stock. Our best seller is still our hybrids. Players are gradually replacing their 2 and 3 irons that they never hit. When they first came available, I was skeptical and thought they were just another fad like the “driving iron”. I was incorrect. I now carry two of them in my bag and when playing with members I’m seeing more and more of them. We have most of the popular makes plus we have them in ladies and senior flexes. You can take them out at any time even if you want to head out to the local range.

MAINTENANCE (Chuck Garland, Grounds Superintendent)

Week of July 3rd Top Dressing of Greens and Normal Course Maintenance
Week of July 10th Ongoing Normal Course Maintenance
Week of July 17th Ongoing Normal Course Maintenance
Week of July 24th Ongoing Normal Course Maintenance
Week of July 31st Ongoing Normal Course Maintenance

The warmth and humidity of July and August is now upon us and, as a result, irrigation requirements increase. We are in the process of upgrading our distribution system and this will have a significant positive impact on the irrigation cycle at Cedarhill. Despite system improvements, the event of irrigating fairways in late mornings and early afternoons on a sporadic basis will remain a reality in the near term. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

Remember that all levels of course maintenance are weather dependent and subject to change. Please ensure to check with the Pro Shop prior to your round in order to determine course conditions and/or which activities are underway.
