Tee Times Newsletter - December 2005

December 15, 2005

Message from Management

The golf course is closed for another season and Elvis has left the building. Early November gave us some hope that winter had forgotten about the Ottawa area but we were quickly brought back to reality around Remembrance Day and, in fact, closed earlier this season than last. Many club events are planned for the winter months and upcoming events are being announced with this bulletin. An event calendar will be sent out in early January and all are encouraged to come out and support the efforts of your club and Social Committee in making it happen at Cedarhill in 2006.

New Member Survey

Thank you to all “new members” and randomly selected “existing members” for responding to a rather comprehensive and lengthy member survey. Some excellent feedback was received and the encouragement and stamp of approval given to a number of our initiatives is certainly appreciated. There is, however, always room for improvement and you have stated a number of areas where you believe we can do a better job in catering to the needs of the membership. Areas where common concerns and recommendations were put forward and are within our overall strategy will be addressed in the coming year.

Pro Shop

Our current Pro Shop will be relocated during the first week of December to make way for a reconfiguration of the existing tee box on Hole #1 and for the expansion of our netted warm-up area. A small component of the work on these changes will take place in December, weather permitting, and is scheduled for completion in April of 2006. The Pro Shop building will be temporarily moved closer to the clubhouse and current plans call for replacement with a new and expanded structure in the April/May time frame of 2006.

Golf Course

The early snow and cold weather in November delayed the completion of a number of our initiatives which began on the course in the latter part of October. We were successful in completing the heavy construction with respect to work on several cart paths and the rebuilding of tees on Holes #5, #8, #9 and #11 and the balance of sodding around these areas will be completed in the Spring. Greens #9 and #3 were sodded with “Bent Grass” taken from our nursery and a new bunker to the right of #3 green is close to completion. Our 2006 activities will be directed primarily to our ongoing maintenance programs but in the event we are able to commence with work on our overall redevelopment program, you will be kept advised well in advance of such work being undertaken.

Social Committee

A sincere thank you goes out to our members and their guests who participated in and supported the recent “Murder Mystery Night” held on October 28th. Not surprisingly, a large number of our astute membership came up with the right answer in the “who done it” exercise. No doubt your sleuthing skills are honed in auditing score cards throughout the year. Lots of laughter and a certain “to do again” event. The November 16th Food and Wine matching night was also a great success. The event was sold out shortly after it was announced and we were forced to turn away as many as we were able to accommodate. The sommelier was excellent as was the wine and the evening was very informative. Tom and his kitchen staff did an excellent job with the lamb and other items you don’t normally see on the menu at Cedarhill. The level of member participation in both these events clearly indicates the membership wants to see a more expanded social program and this is where our focus will be for 2006. A brief calendar of events is listed hereunder which gives an outline of planned events through February 5th of 2006. Sign up early and avoid disappointment.

Greens Committee - Scott Brewster, Chair

For those of you who cleaned up their clubs and packed them away early, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the work Chuck and his crew were able to complete before putting the course away for the winter. The weatherman didn’t really want to cooperate, rain through much of October and November, but our greens keeping staff persevered to get the job done.

The cart path from the 7th green to the 8th tee has been rerouted behind the 13th White tee to avoid some of the dangerous crossover. The 8th tee has been widened and moved slightly right with the cart path now on the left of the tee.

The White tee for hole #11 has been relocated to the front of the Blue tee, lengthening the hole and encouraging play away from the road and the out-of-bounds across the road.

The White and Blue teeing area for the 5th hole has been expanded and raised, completing most of the redesign process for that hole.

The White and Blue tees at hole #9 have been rebuilt and the green re-sodded. The 3rd green has also been re-sodded and a sand trap added to the right of the hole. The trap should make play at #3 more interesting as well as addressing the soggy ground leading to the 4th tee.

We can also expect to see some more changes around the 1st tee as the pro shop building will be relocated close to the clubhouse allowing for an expanded warm-up/practice area. Congratulations to Chuck and his crew.

Senior Men's Committee - Alan Bentley, Chair

The Cedarhill Senior men had a great year in 2005. The windup breakfast on October 13th was attended by 20 seniors who are all looking forward to another great year in 2006. We hope to see everyone back for breakfast April 27, 2006 to kick off the next year. This year the Havelin Trophy was won by Ed Cashman, with Bob Seeley a close second. Len Richard won the point total competition for the year. Congratulations guys!

We have been very pleased with the improvements to the course this fall in preparation for next season. The new tees will give everyone a challenge.

Congratulations are in order to the course management and to Chuck in particular for the great course this year, in spite of the heat! We look forward to the winter golf with Greg Chambers and hope to hear from any of the snowbirds over the winter. Good health and travels to all.

Day Ladies Committee - Robbie Dempster, Chair

Another great summer of golf has come and gone. We enjoyed our Tuesday get-togethers and were pleased with the many positive changes in the course design this year – particularly the new tee-off on #17, which took that nasty water hole out of play!

The Day Ladies held their Closing Luncheon on Tuesday, October 4th. The meal was fantastic – many thanks to our Food & Beverage Manager, Elias.

The trophies for three main events were awarded to the winners. In the hotly contested Davis Cup - 2 Ball, two winners finally emerged after the first match ended in a tie. Another 18 holes had to be played and again, the match went to the final holes. A real thriller, right to the end!

Event winners are as follows:

Davis Cup - 2 Ball: Winners: Mary Gavan & Robbie Dempster, Runners-up: Dini Nugent & Liz White

Handicap Event: Winner: Michi Small, Runner-up: Liz White

Tombstone Event: Winner: Betty Sanderson

Most Improved Golfer: Winner: Hilda Nezan, Runners-up: Carole Myers & Robbie Dempster

We look forward to the 2006 season. Please mark Tuesday, May 2nd on your calendars, as that will be the date for our Opening Meeting to be held at 9:00 a.m., followed by golf, weather permitting.

Have a great winter.

Business Ladies Committee - Connie Froats, Outgoing Chair

Following a great summer of golf, our closing dinner was held on Tuesday, October 11th. Trophy winners were as follows:

Business Ladies Cup: Bev Goold

Ringer Board (overall): Joanne Gosewitz

Most Improved Golfer: Dawn Burnett

Team Golf: Bev Goold, Kathie Cutland, Trudy Tully, Nina Heffernan, Penny Wells, Anna Malencia, Helen Todd, Connie Froats

Thanks to the members who participated in our 50/50 draw, the sponsor night hosted by Gail Clayton-Brown and Joanne Gosewitz and the Christmas in July event. Enough money was raised to greatly enhance our gift table. Thanks also to John from J.C. Orchards who donated many beautiful mums and pumpkins which not only provided decoration but were used as prizes. Tom our chef and his staff, Alex and Sam our servers, provided a most enjoyable meal and service. Our Golf Professional, Greg Chambers and his staff, our starter and the marshals were a great assistance to all of us throughout the season. THANKS. Last but not least, our committee members were terrific. Hope to see everyone back next season and a special welcome to our incoming Chairperson for the 2006 season, Bev Goold. Have a great winter!

Pro Shop News - Greg Chambers, Head Professional

I hope everyone is wintering well! My assistant Pat and I are still here and open for Christmas shopping up until Christmas Eve. All of our summer wear and golf equipment is on sale and our new sweaters for men and ladies are in. We still have a few demo’s remaining and two sets of Cobra premium rentals, right-handed, are still for sale. The Cobra sets that include woods, irons, putter and bag retail new for $2,159.99 but we are selling them for $999.95. We can still place special orders up until the 15th of December for clubs or winter wear.

Our indoor golf simulators will be starting up again on Friday, January 6th. We are going to do some form of league play or weekly scoring prizes that will wrap up with a banquet in April. You can come in for a quick round with the guys, a quiet 9 holes and lunch with the ladies or just stop in for a quick practice session or lesson. There are no advanced booking restrictions so you can plan as far ahead as you need for a small group function or a weekly set booking.

Hope to see everyone over the holidays and have a safe and happy Christmas.

P.S. Don’t forget that all 2005 Gift Certificates expire on December 23rd, 2005.
